Music Choices
In yesterday's post, I discussed the scenes I wanted to record in the beginning of my film opening, and the shots I would use for them. The main premise of these scenes is to introduce my two main characters and highlight the difference between them. One way I can do this is through meticulous song choice! Today, I'll be sharing the songs I chose to include within my film--particularly why I chose them and how they will represent my characters. Without further ado, let's dive right in!
1. ETA by NewJeans
"ETA" was releasted by the girl group NewJeans in 2023. It's a K-pop song, but also blends elements from the genres dance-pop, and favela funk. The song is recognized for its high-energy beat and fast-tempo. In other words, it's super fun and catchy! It's one of my favorite songs from this band & makes me want to get up and dance. I'm going to play this song when my film's first protagonist--the "girly-girl" character, whom I have yet to find a name for--is doing her morning routine and getting ready for school. This character is super cheerful, carefree, and optimistic, which matches the vibe this song gives. By introducing her to this tune, I hope to reveal her energetic personality to the audience and uplift my viewers.
2. My Own Summer (Shove It) by Deftones
This song differs heavily from the last one! It was released in 1997 by the famous rock band Deftones and is one of their most popular songs. This is another song I like alot. I plan to include the song's heavy-metal, low-tuned guitar intro--which happens to be my favorite part about this song--when presenting my second protagonist to the audience. Unlike the last character, she falls under the more edgy, mysterious, "teenage dirtbag" trope. I believe hard-launching her character to this super metal & angsty song will effectively reveal this to the audience, especially in contrast to the track by NewJeans.
Final Notes
Even though these songs are polar opposites, I still really like them both & listen to them regularly. In a way, I feel like this is symbolic of my film's premise. It's about two teenage girls coming together, despite how different or incompatible they may seem. Putting these two wildly different songs into this one film shows they can actually work well together--even when the cooperation is unexpected!
